What E4 Means
E4 records that the compressor never once switched off between two consecutive defrost cycles. U-Line does not put this on the display — it is written into the log for a technician to find. On a wine cabinet it is worth more than it sounds, because a unit running flat out is holding temperature by brute force and has no reserve left for a warm afternoon.
Common Causes of E4
- Condenser coil loaded with dust in a poorly ventilated built-in cavity
- Ambient temperature around the cabinet running high, common for a unit installed near an oven, dishwasher or in an unconditioned cellar
- A door seal leaking continuously, so the cabinet never stops asking for cooling
- Refrigerant charge falling slowly, with the compressor compensating by running constantly
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Pull the grille and look at the condenser before concluding anything. Wine cabinets are frequently built into bar cabinetry and tight island runs where the coil collects dust faster than anyone expects, and a blocked coil is the most common reason a compressor stops cycling off.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Because nothing appears on the display, this one is routinely discovered only after the cabinet has already drifted warm, by which point the collection has been sitting in the wrong conditions for a while.
- Continuous running masks a developing sealed-system problem right up until it stops masking it, and refrigerant diagnosis requires an EPA-certified technician with recovery equipment.
- Clearing the log without addressing why the compressor never rested just removes the evidence and leaves the cabinet running the same way.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
