What U-Choose Setting 0 to -5 Means
On U-Line nugget machines a flashing number between 0 and -5 is not an error code — it is the U-Choose ice adjustability setting being displayed. U-Line ships these machines at 0, which produces firm compact nuggets, and -5 at the other end gives deliberately soft, chewable ice. A machine sitting at -4 or -5 will make exactly the soft ice many owners then report as a defect.
Common Causes of U-Choose Setting 0 to -5
- The setting moved toward -5 deliberately by someone who wanted chewable ice
- The setting changed by accident during a long key press
- A control board replaced and left on a value that is not what the household was used to
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Hold the key for about five seconds and the current setting flashes on the display. Note what it reads before changing anything, because that number explains a great deal about ice that seems too soft or too wet.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Soft ice from a U-Choose setting and slushy ice from a genuine problem look similar in the bin but have nothing else in common — one is a number, the other can be poor water quality or a failing condenser fan.
- Chasing soft ice as a mechanical problem leads to descaling, valve checks and pump work on a machine that is doing exactly what it was set to do.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
