What Bin Shut-Off Arm Raised Means

Before U-Line moved to temperature-sensed bin levels, its undercounter ice makers stopped production with a mechanical shut-off arm: raised means the bucket is treated as full, lowered means the machine runs. On these older units that arm is the entire bin-level system — there is no display, no indicator light and no code to read, just the position of a wire arm.

Common Causes of Bin Shut-Off Arm Raised

  • Arm genuinely raised by a full bucket, which is normal operation
  • Ice fused around the arm and holding it up after the bucket was emptied
  • A scoop, bag or container left in the bin pressing against the arm
  • The arm itself bent or its linkage worn after decades of service

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

With the machine switched off, look at where the arm is sitting and whether anything is holding it up. A bag, a scoop left in the bucket, or a wedge of ice fused against the arm will hold it raised and stop production with a visibly empty bin.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Forcing a stuck arm downward can bend the linkage, and replacement parts for ice makers of this age are not always available any more.
  • On these machines the ON-OFF switch and the light switch sit behind the front grille rather than on a control panel, so a unit reported as dead is sometimes simply switched off where nobody thought to look.
  • A machine that has been stopped by its arm for a long time will have a warm, wet bin, and the drain and bucket want checking before it is brought back into service.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

Bin Shut-Off Arm Raised FAQ

At the shut-off arm and at the switches behind the front grille. This generation has no problem display at all, so the answer is always mechanical or a switch.

Often yes. These units are mechanically simple, and a bent arm, a worn linkage or a tired switch is a contained repair on a sealed system that may still be sound.
