What E5 (Class Series) Means
In the Class-series error log E5 is Thermistor 1 reading shorted. Thermistor 1 is the primary sensor the board regulates from, so a short here is not a background problem — the control is acting on a number it should not trust, and it will do so confidently.
Common Causes of E5 (Class Series)
- Moisture that has worked into the sensor body or its connector and bridged the two conductors
- Insulation chafed through where the harness passes a sheet-metal edge
- Age-related breakdown inside the sensor element itself
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
One observation helps a lot: whether the cabinet is running warm or running cold. A shorted sensor reads as a fixed, wrong temperature, and which direction the cabinet drifts tells a technician what the board thinks it is seeing.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A shorted primary sensor and a genuinely failing compressor can produce identical complaints from the outside, and testing the wrong one first costs a whole visit.
- Where moisture caused the short it has usually reached neighbouring connectors too, and U-Line's own service guidance is to replace the harness with the sensor when corrosion is present.
- Reaching this sensor means going behind interior liner panels, which is work that may affect parts warranty coverage on a unit still inside its term — check your terms before starting.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
